Two Million Steps Down, Eight Million to Go for Kettering’s Carl Peach
Carl Peach is on a mission to prove that Sight Loss does not stop you from achieving incredible things, as he walks #TenMillionSteps to raise crucial funds for local charity NAB – Sight Support for Northamptonshire. Carl is now 20% of the way along his 4000 mile journey that he aims to complete in just 12 months.
Just over a year ago, Carl was diagnosed with sight loss, and received support and advice from NAB. This, coupled with the encouragement of friends and family, helped him view sight loss as a chance to push boundaries and explore new opportunities rather than a negative.
Throughout his now 2 million step journey, Carl has already overcome so much. As his eyesight continues to deteriorate, recognising and avoiding day-to-day obstacles such as lampposts, cars, and even other people has become much more difficult. To complete the challenge in a year, Carl has to maintain an average daily step count of 27,000, meaning opportunities for rest are scarce. This has led to him braving the elements on a regular basis, even walking during a particularly violent hail storm.
With so many steps to take, Carl keeps things interesting by inviting anyone to join him on one of his many walks across the county. A dozen people accompanied him for a special circuit of Irchester Country Park on his 60th Birthday at the end of June, which means Carl has now walked with over 50 people.
When asked what advice Carl would give to someone at the start of their sight loss journey, he had this to say:
“Ask for help, be optimistic and keep saying yes! Embrace technology and the support offered from people around you to ensure you can keep doing the things you love. Every challenge is an opportunity; I have met so many new people and done so many new things since my sight loss journey began.”
