Investing in the next generation of asbestos consultants

Blogs

The reason we are one of the UK’s best asbestos consultancies is because we have always been passionate about investing in our team.

Our management team has more than 100 years of experience between them and we take our commitment to managing asbestos concerns for clients of all sizes from all industries incredibly seriously.

We know that the services we deliver save lives and protect organisations and company bosses and managers from the risk of prosecution and crippling fines.

Our award-winning team is all too painfully aware that the UK’s reliance on asbestos as a building material for decades means that properties up and down the country, including private homes, workplaces, schools and hospitals, continue to harbour this potentially fatal substance.

Sadly, this means that the risk of people being exposed to asbestos here will continue to be high for a long time to come which is why our management team has invested thousands of pounds in training and kit for the next generation of specialist asbestos consultants.

We are immensely proud to say in the past few years six of our trainees have gone on to become fully fledged asbestos consultants and two-thirds of them have chosen to continue their career with Acorn Analytical Services. By training them the ‘Acorn Way’ we can be confident that they are providing clients with asbestos management services of the highest standard.

The reality is finding high calibre asbestos consultants in the UK isn’t as easy as you might expect. Often those in need of asbestos management services can find it very difficult to find the right level of asbestos consultant because the skills required to do this specialist job are bespoke to our industry and you can’t study at college or university to become an asbestos consultant.

When we seek out prospective trainees we’re looking for very special people. We need people who have a good level of knowledge of science, mathematics and English. In addition, they must be willing to travel and enjoy physical work, such as carrying equipment and climbing ladders, but feel equally at home working in the office. Finally, they must also have a fantastic eye for detail. You won’t be surprised to hear when we find such people we do everything we can to bring them on board and nurture them so they can develop their skills with us.

This is why we’re thrilled to reveal that in the past few weeks, we have welcomed three new trainees to Acorn’s base in Northampton. Charlie Dalby, 20, of Oakham, Shane Richardson, 24, of Northampton, and Jake Newell, 21, also of Northampton, have all come on board as Trainee Asbestos Consultants. Acorn is training all three of them and is paying for them to become qualified. They have already had a full induction into the industry with Acorn director and quality manager Paul Knights and have begun accompanying our highly qualified surveyors and analysts on site visits. The long-term goal is for all three of them to become fully qualified consultants and we look forward to seeing them go on to develop their careers further at Acorn.

We are proud to be investing in such talented young people and providing job opportunities for our area – especially during these uncertain times when so many people are struggling to find skilled employment. We are also proud to be nurturing homegrown talent and helping our staff to continue to develop and grow with us. However, more than anything we are proud to know that by investing in the next generation of asbestos consultants we are going to help save more lives.

Everyone here at Acorn is passionate about our work. We work hard to educate the public about the dangers of asbestos and our expert team provides a full asbestos support service to ensure that our clients’ risk from asbestos is correctly managed, repaired or removed quickly and on budget.

We genuinely love what we do – being an asbestos consultant is a very varied role. It’s hugely satisfying – particularly when you are helping people during emergencies. You also get to travel, see the country and have the chance to see behind the scenes in lot of other organisations. There are good progression opportunities, the job is never boring, no two days are the same and there is the opportunity to gain lots of qualifications.
