Safety consultancy backs UK Small Business Week

An award-winning health and safety consultancy is offering free legionella compliance audits to SMEs nationwide in support of UK Small Business Week this week.

The awareness week, which runs from 1st to 7th June, was devised to make small businesses ‘visible, valued and actively supported’, and the gesture from Acorn Safety Services ticks all three boxes while ensuring the highest standards of workplace safety.

Last summer, Acorn Safety Services offered the free audits following a concerning increase in cases of Legionnaire’s Disease across the UK.

The expert team say many sites, even well managed ones, are unknowingly uncompliant with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety Executive’s Legionnella guidance (ACoP L8 and HSG274) and urge businesses and organisations to take up their complimentary offer of help.

However, greater awareness and action such as the free audits from the Acorn Safety have seen the number of cases drop by 22% year on year in the latest government report in November.

The audit takes less than an hour and includes a conversation with a legionella consultant, review of the company’s legionella risk assessment status and compliance, plus checks on logbooks, flushing, temperature records, and visual inspection of high-risk areas if deemed necessary.

The specialists will also give clear recommendations and an action plan detailing any next steps.

Operations Director, Zeynep Guzelkasap, said: “UK Small Business Week shines a light on a sector that is often the lifeblood of local economy. These small businesses battle numerous challenges and we hope that by offering the free legionella audits it will give them one less thing to worry about.

“Many businesses don’t realise they are non-compliant and due to lack of time or resource may have outdated or missing legionella risk assessments, inconsistent or incomplete temperature and flushing logs, no appointed or trained responsible person, and neglected assets like tanks, showers and thermostatic mixing valves.

“These oversights can lead to hefty penalties and, more importantly, create a real danger for the workforce, who run the risk of contracting Legionnaire’s Disease if the water system does contain legionella.

“We are here to help – and it won’t cost you a penny!”
