Northamptonshire Chamber members met with the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, in a roundtable discussion. The main aim of the conversation was to discuss current business conditions that businesses are facing. The mood among UK businesses in mid-2026 is one of cautious resilience rather than
confidence. Many companies report that trading remains stable or is improving slightly, but they are reluctant to invest or recruit because they see a number of structural challenges affecting the wider economy. Recent business surveys consistently show that economic uncertainty is the single biggest concern, followed by costs, skills and weak demand.

Louise Wall, Northamptonshire Chamber CEO, said “the concerns raised by our members echo those of our Quarterly Economic Survey. Whilst business is relatively stable, the future is somewhat uncertain for growth, but with the right support and investment we hope to
see things improve over the next 18 months.”
