New frame for energy chain systems cuts transport volume by 88%

The readychain® eco-rack maximises space and cuts shipping costs

With traffic on our roads continuing to rise as well as fuel costs, efficient use of transport space is becoming increasingly important. In response to this growing problem, motion plastics specialist igus has developed the readychain® eco-rack, a smart, sustainable transport and assembly frame for pre-assembled energy chain systems. The eco-rack can be dismantled without tools, reducing return transport volume by up to 88% compared to traditional metal frames. This results in lower CO₂ emissions, reduced shipping costs, and more efficient logistics.

A smarter way to ship

Truck convoys stretching for miles have become a regular sight on Britain’s motorways and with traffic expected to double by 2051, optimising every inch of space is essential. Designed as returnable and reusable packaging, this modular transport rack helps logistics companies manage pre-assembled energy chains more efficiently, which is all part of the broader mission at igus to make industry more sustainable.

Modular, lightweight, and tool-free

The frame is assembled on a modified Euro pallet using interlocking modules, no tools required. Sheet metal components that form part of the customer’s machine setup help position the energy chain precisely, making installation quick and easy.

Once the system is installed, the eco-rack can be disassembled in minutes and returned for reuse. “A fully assembled eco-rack takes up about 1.5 cubic metres of space,” explains John Barker, Product Manager for readychain® at igus. “After dismantling, it’s just 0.17 cubic metres, an 88% reduction in volume compared to conventional welded metal frames. Plus, it’s lighter, which helps reduce fuel consumption during transportation.”

The readychain® service is now available at 13 locations across the world, with 400 systems shipped to customers each week.

“Instead of sourcing components from multiple suppliers, customers receive a complete, ready-to-install system under a single part number,” says Barker. “This not only simplifies logistics but also reduces the number of individual shipments, for efficient delivery.”
