Mid-Year Leadership Check-Up: Review Your Impact, Influence and Direction
Six months in: a moment to pause, reflect and reset
It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the year.
Back in January, many of us started with good intentions, ambitious goals and a clear picture of what we wanted the year ahead to look like. Yet life has a habit of gathering momentum. Work gets busy. Priorities shift. Unexpected challenges appear. Before we know it, we can find ourselves moving at full speed without stopping to ask whether we are still heading in the direction we originally intended.
That is why the halfway point of the year offers such a valuable opportunity. Not to judge yourself for what you have or haven’t achieved. Not to focus only on targets, plans or productivity. But to take a step back and ask a more honest question: how am I really doing?
Whether you are leading a business, managing a team, navigating a career transition or simply trying to create a life and career that feel more aligned, this is the perfect time to check in with yourself.
The Impact You’re Having
Most people measure progress by what they achieve, but what about the impact they are having along the way?
Impact is not always visible. It is not usually found in a performance dashboard or a completed to-do list. It often lives in the way people experience us, in our conversations, reactions, decisions and behaviours.
Think about the last six months.
- How have you shown up?
- How do people feel after spending time with you?
- Do you create confidence, encouragement and trust, or have stress, pressure and overwhelm unintentionally shaped some of your interactions?
The reality is that many of us are so focused on moving forward that we rarely stop to consider the effect we are having on those around us, or even on ourselves.
A useful reflection is to think about three recent situations that mattered. Perhaps a difficult conversation, a meeting where your opinion carried weight, or a moment when someone needed your support:
- What did you contribute?
- What impact did you leave behind?
- Would you handle it the same way again?
Sometimes the smallest moments reveal the most.
The Influence You’re Creating
Influence is often misunderstood. Many people associate it with position, authority or status, but in reality, influence comes from consistency. It’s created through the behaviours we model, the standards we set and the values we reinforce every day.
Whether you realise it or not, people notice what you celebrate, what you tolerate and what you choose to ignore. Your actions send signals. Your responses create permission. Your behaviour shapes culture, relationships and expectations.
That is true whether you are leading a team, running a business, supporting clients or simply influencing those around you.
As you reflect on the first half of the year, consider what you have been reinforcing through your actions:
- What behaviours have you encouraged?
- Where have you perhaps stayed silent when something needed to be said?
- What example have you been setting?
- Perhaps more importantly, what do you want to be known for?
Not your job title. Not your achievements. But the way people experience you. The qualities they associate with you. The difference you make.
If someone described you at the end of this year, what would you hope they would say? And how closely does that match your reality today?
The Direction You’re Heading
Many of us spend so much time focusing on what we are doing that we forget to ask why we are doing it. It is easy to slip into autopilot, to continue with familiar habits, to keep saying yes to the same commitments and to chase goals that may no longer feel aligned with who we are becoming.
The halfway point of the year is an opportunity to reconnect with your intentions.
Is the direction you are heading still the right one? What matters most to you now? What do you want the next six months to feel like? What needs more attention, and what needs less?
Sometimes growth is not about adding more. Sometimes it is about creating space. Space to think, space to focus and space to let go of the things that are no longer serving you.
The most meaningful progress often comes from deciding what to stop doing as much as what to start doing.
A Simple Mid-Year Reset
You do not need a full life overhaul to benefit from reflection. Often, a small adjustment made with intention can create significant change over time.
So before you move into the second half of the year, take a moment to pause. Reflect on your impact. Consider your influence. Reconnect with your direction. Then ask yourself one final question:
If I continue exactly as I am today, where will I be by the end of the year?
And if the answer is not quite where you want to be, what is one small change you could make now? Because meaningful change rarely happens by accident. It begins with awareness, followed by intention, and then action. The next six months are still yours to shape.
