From administrator to deputy CEO – Commsave’s Liellah Currey wins national award

Commsave Credit Union’s Deputy Chief Executive, Liellah Currey, has been named one of the UK’s leading young credit union professionals – winning the prestigious national Tracy Slane Award less than 10 years since first joining the credit union as an administrator.

The award, presented by All Together Money – the representative body for Britain’s credit unions – recognises a young person who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to their credit union and made a significant contribution to its success and development. Open to nominations from credit unions across Great Britain, it is one of the sector’s most respected individual honours, named in memory of Tracy Slane, who served as Conference Officer for the movement until her death in 2004, aged 25.

Liellah said: “I’ve watched Commsave change enormously since I first joined, and I’ve loved seeing that even small changes can make a real difference to members’ lives. I have also worked with lots of other credit unions to help them do the same, and it is that willingness to share and support each other that makes this sector so special.

“I’m honoured to receive this award, proud to be part of Commsave’s journey and am fortunate to work alongside some fantastic colleagues who share the same commitment to our members.”

Now 30, Liellah first joined Commsave during university holidays before taking up a permanent role after graduating. In less than 10 years she has progressed through a series of leadership positions and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in November 2025.

Liellah’s career has been closely linked to Commsave’s growth and development, with a particular focus on improving services, protecting members and embracing new technology.

One of her most significant achievements was leading the project that secured ISO 27001 accreditation for information security, making Commsave the first UK credit union to achieve the internationally recognised standard. The project strengthened the organisation’s approach to information security while setting an example of best practice for the wider sector.

She has also played a key role in helping the credit union – whose headquarters are based in Northamptonshire – achieve record membership growth. 2026 marks Commsave’s 35th anniversary, with the credit union now supporting more than 43,000 members across the UK, its highest number yet.

Matt Goulding, Chief Executive at Commsave Credit Union, added: “Liellah has made an exceptional contribution to both Commsave and the wider credit union movement. She has progressed from administrator to Deputy Chief Executive, demonstrating remarkable dedication, leadership and a deep commitment to the credit union ethos throughout her career.

“Her impact on Commsave’s growth has been significant. She combines strategic vision with operational excellence and, importantly, always keeps the needs of our members at the centre of what she does.

“What particularly distinguishes Liellah is her willingness to share her knowledge with others. Her work with credit unions across the country demonstrates the collaborative spirit at the heart of our movement. This award is deserved recognition of everything she has contributed to Commsave, our members and the wider credit union sector.”

Commsave provides savings accounts, affordable and responsible credit and financial education, with a focus on helping members build greater financial resilience.

Liellah added: “We’re not here to replace banks – it’s the financial inclusion side that really distinguishes credit unions. A lot of our members simply wouldn’t be eligible for affordable credit elsewhere, and making it easy for people to save, often through payroll deductions, means many are building up savings for the first time in their lives. That sense of financial security is what credit unions are really about.”
