Driver goes 27,000 extra miles for charity

A retired bus inspector, who volunteers for Cynthia Spencer Hospice Charity, has travelled more than 27,000 miles driving patients to and from the charity’s palliative care services.

To mark Volunteers Week (1st to 7th June 2026), Dave Slinn has shared his experience of volunteering with the much-loved local cause in the hope of inspiring more people to give up their time to make a difference.

Dave, 78, signed up to be a driver alongside his wife Beryl more than eight years ago. Since then, he has transported countless patients to vital care, with 75-year-old Beryl now donating her time every Friday to orchestrate the weekly volunteer driver’s schedule.

But for Dave, the car journeys are much more than simply getting someone from A to B.

“I brought somebody in for the first time the other day and the staff said the next day how the patient had said how much he enjoyed the ride with me,” he said.

“For me their experience starts when they get in the car, not when they get to the hospice and I make sure I talk to them and make them feel comfortable in my company. It’s up to them what they share but we chat away and it’s so nice. I like driving and I obviously enjoy helping the people.”

Dave has voluntarily driven hundreds of people thousands of miles across Northamptonshire, as well as journeying to London to deliver a patient to a hospital consultation. Depending on demand, his hours fluctuate each week.

“I really love the job,” said Dave. “It’s a lovely thing to do because you’re helping people. The patients and the staff are so good to us and they are so appreciative. With the number of volunteers here, I think the place would shut down without us.”

Dave also volunteers on the fundraising side of the charity, collecting donation tins around the town and supporting at events.

Cynthia Spencer Hospice Charity Community & Events Fundraiser Lead Katie Fouracre said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our charity and Dave is absolutely correct when he says we would struggle to provide our vital services without them.

“Dave and Beryl are a wonderful example of the difference you can make by doing something really special with your time and give back to the community to help those who really need it.

“Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you could ever do with your time. Whatever your situation or age, taking the time to volunteer can enrich your own life while helping the lives of others.”
