Students from Northampton College’s Level 3 Illustration and Art and Design courses have completed a vibrant new mural project at a much-loved town centre café and artisan bakery, bringing colour and creativity to the space.

The project invited students to respond to a live creative brief set by The Good Loaf in Overstone Road, challenging them to design artwork that reflected the café’s values as a Northampton-based social enterprise.

Following a competitive selection process, Greta Pogany, Ruby Seymour, Wren Taylor and Eden Linnell were chosen to bring their striking designs to life by creating murals within the café.

Throughout January, the students worked on-site to scale up and paint their designs directly onto the café walls, gaining valuable real-world experience of professional mural production, collaboration and working to a client brief.

Illustration teacher Katie Brosnan said: “The mural project forms part of our commitment to providing students with meaningful, industry-focused opportunities that connect creative education with local organisations and social impact.

“We’re grateful to The Good Loaf for giving our students the platform to showcase their talents. It’s been a brilliant experience for them and will stand them in good stead for their future careers.”

The Good Loaf is a vital social business supplying freshly baked products to businesses across Northamptonshire on a wholesale basis, while also running a popular community café.

Chief executive Suzy van Rooyen said: “Our core mission is to provide life-changing employment opportunities for vulnerable local women, supporting them to break cycles of poverty, unemployment and offending.

“This collaboration with Northampton College has further strengthened our community spirit. Customers have praised the murals for making the space feel bright and lovely, while women on placement here have expressed pride in the transformation, describing the café as ‘warm and inviting’.”

The Good Loaf is open 9am to 2.30pm Tuesday to Saturday.
