Collaborative Action Helps Resident Overcome Four-Year Pest Issue
When Eileen first contacted The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation (TMDF), she had been living with a severe rodent infestation for four years. What initially appeared to be a minor problem, droppings found in a cupboard and the discovery of rodents behind her freezer, had developed into a prolonged and distressing situation. Over time, the issue left her anxious, fearful, and increasingly unable to use parts of her home. On one occasion, Eileen was even hospitalised for dehydration after becoming too frightened to enter her kitchen.
Encouraged by a neighbour and fellow TMDF client, Eileen sought support from TMDF. TMDF’s founder, Teresa McCarthy-Dixon, visited the property and arranged for Hawk Pest Control to carry out an assessment. A subsequent investigation by Hawk Drainage & Groundworks Ltd, including a full CCTV drain survey, identified the cause: rodents were accessing the property through an uncapped pipe left over from a former extension. Recent local flooding had exacerbated the problem significantly.
TMDF then engaged with Eileen’s insurance provider, who initially declined to cover the required repair works. Despite this setback, TMDF continued to advocate on Eileen’s behalf. Hawk Drainage proceeded with the remedial works at a substantially reduced cost, and following persistent correspondence and negotiation, the insurer later agreed to reimburse the full amount.
Eileen expressed her gratitude, explaining that she did not know how she would have managed without TMDF’s support. With the works now completed, her home is once again safe, comfortable, and, in her words, “feels like home again.”
Eileen’s experience demonstrates the tangible impact of TMDF’s advocacy and collaborative partnerships. It highlights how sustained, compassionate intervention between local organisations can deliver life-changing outcomes for residents in need.
