UK Government Seeks Business Views on Potential US Tariff Response
The UK Government has launched a Call for Input to gather views on its suggested response to the new US tariffs. While no retaliatory measures are planned at this stage, the focus remains on securing a successful economic partnership agreement with the US – a position supported by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).
However, Ministers are keen to explore all options and require insights from UK businesses on the potential impact of retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of US goods. This information will help shape any future decisions, should they become necessary.
The list of products being considered in this consultation is here. The BCC will be making a submission to this key Call for Input.
We are calling on our members to share how increased import duties on goods from the US could affect your business – particularly across sectors such as manufacturing, retail, wholesale, agriculture, science, and research.
Key product areas under review include:
-
Chemicals
-
Food and drink
-
Metals and metal products (e.g. copper, iron, steel, aluminium)
-
Tableware, bottles, and household products
-
Motor vehicles and parts (including motorcycles and tyres)
-
Manufacturing or construction goods (e.g. cement)
-
Oils and fuels
-
Electrical energy and power generators
-
Industrial products
-
Furniture and wall/floor coverings
-
Clothing, fabrics, and textiles
The BCC’s Insights Unit has already highlighted pharmaceuticals and semiconductors as sectors where retaliatory tariffs should be avoided. We now seek your views on other products of regional importance that should either be excluded or face reduced tariff rates.
