The changing face of Chinese New Year in Northampton
A face-changing magician will be the headline act at Northampton’s Chinese New Year celebration next month.
The magician is being flown to England from China by the Northamptonshire Chinese Society, who are organising this year's celebration event with support from Northampton Borough Council and the Northampton Community Foundation.
The event will take place in Northampton’s Market Square on Sunday 12 February (11am to 3pm) and will feature entertainment, traditional dances and food from south-east Asia. Entry is free.
In addition to Chinese New Year in Northampton, the magician will also be appearing at a promotional event at Aspers Casino, the event’s major sponsor, and at a celebration dinner being organised at the Oriental Garden restaurant.
Travis Perkins, Oriental Garden, Mandarin Buffet, Fong Spa and the University of Northampton are the other official event partners.
Harry Mau, chairman of Northamptonshire Chinese Society, said: “The face-changing magician is an excellent act and we are delighted that he is coming to Northampton to perform.
“His show is spectacular and together with traditional dances, entertainment and food, this will be a colourful and joyful event which I hope all communities in Northampton can come to and enjoy.
“We were really pleased with the success of the event that was held in Northampton two years ago but obviously we want this year’s Year of the Rooster celebration to be even bigger and better.
Councillor Anna King, borough council cabinet member with responsibility for community engagement and safety, said: “I am really excited about the event which I hope will showcase the strong community spirit that exists in Northampton.
“Other communities in the town are joining the celebration and it promises to be an enjoyable and fun day out for all the family.
“The Chinese New Year event will help put Northampton firmly on the map as a great place for people of all communities, backgrounds and faiths to live, work and visit.”
