Business is booming as aspiring entrepreneurs head to Northampton College
The number of students studying business at Northampton College has more than doubled in two years, with more people than ever before interested in setting up their own company.
Latest figures have revealed a total of 296 people applied for the College’s Level 3 BTEC in Business in 2016, compared to 199 the year before and 117 in 2014.
And 2017 looks like being even more popular, with 92 people having already applied for courses starting this September, compared to just 37 at the same stage last year.
The figures reflect the growing entrepreneurial spirit in Northampton, with the town recently highlighted as one of the best towns in the country to start your own business and the 2016 Centre for Cities report ranking it as the best place outside London for start-ups.
Andrea Brown, curriculum manager for business studies at Northampton College, said: “We have seen a huge increase in the number of people applying for business courses. There seems to be a feel-good factor in the local business community and word is getting out that Northampton is a great place to do business.
“There are plenty of opportunities out there and a business course is not industry specific, you can use it to go into anything from finance to farming and recruitment to running a coffee shop.
“It’s all about making students employable and giving them an understanding of what is needed to finance, promote and run a business. Students are not just picking up a qualification, they are learning skills to last them a lifetime.”
Business students from Northampton College have gone on to secure leading roles with prominent local employers such as Nationwide, Barclaycard and Opus Energy.
Of the 206 students studying business at Northampton College in 2015/16, a total of 52 per cent went on to employment, 27 per cent went on to study business at a higher level while 15 per cent went on to University.
The Level 3 course was oversubscribed in 2016, with 40 people unable to get on. Competition is expected to be equally as tough this year, with record numbers of prospective students showing an interest in the subject.
